Everything Apple Announced During iPhone 2018 Keynote

September 18, 2018

On Wednesday, Apple unveiled the latest iPhone line-up with some blazingly fast specs and more of the dreaded notch that has caused so much contention among smartphone enthusiasts. Here's a peek at every new product you can expect to get your hands on in the coming months.

Three New iPhone Models

Before the event, it was widely rumored that Apple would be showcasing three different iPhone models this year. That rumor turned out to be true, as the Cupertino-based company unveiled the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and the iPhone XR.

The iPhone XS features a 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED display, while the iPhone XS Max sees a screen bump up to 6.5-inch. Both phones feature the new A12 Bionic chip that features improved processing power and machine learning technology. Apple says this chip is capable of running 5 trillion operations per second, while last year's A11 bionic chip was only capable of running 600 billion per second.

The new chip features a six-core CPU, four-core GPU, and an eight-core neural engine packed inside. Thanks to the new 7nm chip technology used this year, and Apple estimates battery life is 30 minutes better on the iPhone XS and up to an hour better on the iPhone XS Max. That's compared to the iPhone X. The iPhone XS Max is expected to get up to one hour more battery life than the smaller iPhone XS.

The new iPhone models also received an IP68 waterproof rating and will come with storage configurations that start at 64GB and range up to 512GB.

This premium model of the iPhone features a 7-megapixel front-facing camera and a 12-megapixel dual main camera. A new Smart HDR feature on both cameras will help prevent blurry photos while still providing the "selfie effect" that has become so popular on social media.

Both devices will feature a dual SIM. The iPhone XS starts at $999 for the 64GB version, and the iPhone XS Max starts at $1,099 for the same configuration. The iPhone XS is available now, while the iPhone XS Max won't ship until September 21st.

The iPhone XR won't be shipping until October and seems to be Apple's revival of the colorful iPhone 5C. The device features a 6.1-inch display and contains the A12 Bionic chip, a 12-megapixel rear single camera, and a 7-megapixel front-facing camera. Pre-orders for this new colorful version start at $749 for the 64GB version, and the phone is available in Coral, White, Black, Red, Yellow, and Blue.

One exciting new aspect of the iPhone release is that Apple has stopped providing free dongles with the new iPhones.

Apple Watch Series 4

Alongside the reveal of three new iPhone models, Apple also unveiled their latest series of the Apple Watch. Apple addressed cellular connection issues with a new body that houses a much larger display, slimmer body, and a small red ring around the digital crown. The crown also offers haptic feedback. Apple packed in a new S4 chip to double processor speed and a new gyroscope sensor that's capable of detecting falls and alerting your family.

Apple also focused big on the health side of things, showcasing new features in watchOS that make it possible to have better heart rate monitoring. The watch can now detect abnormally low heart rates, irregular rhythm, and it can even take electrocardiograms just by holding your fingertip to the digital crown for 30 seconds. The FDA has cleared the device for release.

New iOS Updates

Apple mainly focused on the reveal of its three new iPhones and the Apple Watch Series 4, but iOS updates did get a small mention in the keynote. Apple says iPhone and iPad users can expect to receive iOS 12 on their devices starting September 17.

Apple is providing the update to a wide number of its older devices, including the iPad Air, iPhone SE, and the 6th-gen iPod Touch.

New Beats by Dre

Alongside the new hardware, Beats by Dre also revealed several new color options for its urBeats3 earbuds. Each of the colors corresponds to the new colors available with the iPhone XR including coral, yellow, and blue.

The Beats Solo3 headphones are now available in Satin Silver and Satin Gold to match the upcoming iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. These new colors are now available on the Beats website for purchase.

Small Stuff

While the main focus of the event was on highlighting the new iPhones and Apple Watch, Tim Cook did briefly mention some upcoming things to add to the Apple ecosystem. Apple is planning to launch new features for the HomePod smart speaker system, including the ability to search song lyrics and set multiple timers.

macOS Mojave will be available on September 24, and tvOS 12 will get an update to offer support for Dolby Atmos technology.

Despite the focus on new accessories, Apple didn't showcase any information about a refresh for the AirPods. The AirPower wireless charging mat was strangely missing from the event, too.
